Gilbert is a town, not a city. It was incorporated on July 6, 1920. It began in 1902 as a rail siding on William "Bobby" Gilbert's land. Until the late 1920s, it was known as the Hay Capital of the World.
Growth came later. Only 1,971 people lived here in 1970. That decade, the Town Council annexed a large strip of county land to make room. The Census Bureau now estimates 287,285 residents, as of July 2025.
